Monday

Matthew 5:1-3

King James Version

5 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:

2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  • Jesus had just begun His ministry and He went up on the mount and when His disciples came, He began to teach them.  Many people call the blessed scriptures the "beatitudes".  This first beatitude says blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.  What does it mean by the poor in spirit?  Write down what you think?

  • Read these scriptures to get an idea: Isaiah 57:15 and Isaiah 66:2

  • God wants us to be of a humble sprit and those that are downtrodden and broken He wants to encourage and lift their spirits.

  • When we read Isaiah 61:1 we see that Isaiah was talking about Jesus. He was going to come and preach good tidings and bind the broken in heart, Amen, that's what He was coming to do, so now that He was here, He said that they are blessed because that's what He was going to do for them bind the broken in heart.

  • Let's Pray.  Dear Lord, thank you for coming to bind the broken hearted and to set the captives free please bless me to be your witness.  In Jesus name Amen.

Tuesday

Matthew 5:4-6

King James Version

4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

  • Just like we talked about Monday how Jesus had come to bind the broken in heart he says blessed are they that mourn because the comforter was going to come to comfort the hearts of the people.  Read this scripture Isaiah 61:3, it talks about how He would give us the oil of joy for our mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.

  • Then the next beatitude says blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth.  Who are the meek? Meek means humbly patient or quiet in nature.  They are humble, gentle and `kind.  Read Isaiah 29:19. They increase their joy in the Lord because they are not worried about anything else, they are not worried about the riches and things of this world because the meek know that they are rich in Christ and in Him is everything they need.  Thats how they inherit the earth.

  • Lastly, when we hunger and thirst meaning we really want to know how and what it means to do what's right so we can please God.  Jesus said we shall be filled.  Also, I think about how the Bible says we should not live by bread alone but every word that proceeded out of the mouth of God and Jesus told the woman at the well that He had living water and he who drinks from the water He gives will never thirst. Amen!

  • Let's pray.  Dear Lord, thank you for blesses those who mourn, are meek and hunger and thirst for righteousness, help us to keep our eyes on you.  In Jesus name, Amen.

Wednesday

Matthew 5:7-9

King James Version

7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

  • We should be merciful so we can obtain mercy.  Here's a story that helps us to understand what mercy is: Mathew 18:21-35 the servant should have shown mercy as he was shown mercy.

  • Next beatitude says the pure in heart shall see God.  Who are the pure in heart?1 Peter 1:22 we see here that those who obey the truth and love the brethren fervently are the pure in heart.  Their love for God and people is without dissimulation, but it is genuine.  How shall they see God when He is a spirit?  They will see Him at work in their lives, when their prayers are being answered, when He speaks to their hearts, and He changes them on the inside so they can produce more fruit.

  • The next one is the peacemakers! In Romans 12:18 and Hebrews 12:14 it says we should live in peace with all men, and they shall be called the children of God.  When the men would revile Jesus and persecute Him the word said He did not revile back but He loved in spite of!  We ought to love others as well in spite of, unconditionally.

  • Homework: Read 1John 3:7-23 and write down a summary of what this means.

  • Let's Pray.  Dear Lord, thank you for being so kind and blessing us to be kind.  Help me to love my brethren we a pure and fervent heart.  In Jesus name, Amen.

Thursday

Matthew 5:10-12

King James Version

10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

  • The first beatitude today says blessed are they which are persecuted for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.  How is it a blessed thing to be persecuted?  Well Jesus says, "if they hate me, they will hate you".  In 2 Timothy 3:12 it says, "Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution."  Them who live for Christ will suffer persecution because people love darkness rather than light.  The word also tells us in 1 Peter 4:1 to arm ourselves to suffer as Christ suffered.  The blessing is, God will never leave us nor forsake us, and He will be there to help us face any persecution or suffering! He will give us sustaining grace to get through it.

  • Then in the next set of scriptures it says to rejoice and be glad because great is your reward in heaven.  So persecuted the prophets before you!  Let's read about some prophets that were persecuted: Paul and Silas

  • Let's Pray! Dear Lord, thank you for your living word! Please bless me to go through any persecution I must go through. In Jesus name, Amen.
